The person is also asked to share their negative emotions, like fear or anger, about the memory, and the physical sensations associated with these negative emotions. The client will be asked to replace the negative thought with a positive thought  while attending to a dual attention stimulus at the same time. The most common dual attention stimulus is lateral eye movements, which is moving the eyes left and right following the therapists hand movements. Dual attention stimuli are believed to facilitate the processing of painful or anxiety-producing memories, promoting deeper reprocessing of the stored memory.  Other forms of dual stimulation involve the use of tapping of bilateral body parts (e.g., both knees) or tones stimulating both ears of the client at the same time. Is EMDR Therapy Effective? There have been a number of research studies that demonstrate the effectiveness of EMDR in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder. In addition, EMDR its supported by the American Psychiatric Association in the treatment of trauma. Despite the scientific evidence that EMDR is an effective treatment for trauma, this approach continues to generate some controversy due to the concern over whether eye movements and other forms of dual attention stimuli are really helpful in processing traumatic memories.   A recent 2013 article in the Journal of Behavioral Therapy and Experimental Psychiatry  analyzed a number of scientific studies on EMDR, and the authors concluded that eye movements are valuable and do alter the processing of emotional memories.   How Can I Find an EMDR Therapist? What have you been doing since you graduated? David: I am originally from Montreal, Quebec, Canada and moved to Toronto when I was seven. I graduated with an Honours Business degree at a school called Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario. I chose this school because it has the best co-op/internship program for business students. I graduated in 2009  and I have held a variety of positions since then. The first year after I graduated I worked for my family business, developing web content, answering phones, and working in the factory. I then moved on to Staples as a Retail Communications Coordinator. In this role I executed a lot of the day to day store communications tasks (preparing notices and updates to stores), creating internal websites, developing and analyzing surveys, and managing internal calendars. Upon completion of my Staples contract, I worked as a Consultant at a marketing agency called Starshot and dealt exclusively with my client, Microsoft. In this role, I managed several programs each program includes a webinar, a series of emails and invitations that are delivered to prospects, data analysis and reporting, social media planning, and monthly presentations. I was essentially an email marketing and marketing automation expert during my time at Starshot, I was able to increase the number of Microsoft Dynamics leads by over 200% and webinar registrants increased 6 times during my tenure! I was actually just offered a job at one of the largest payroll companies in Canada called Ceridian to work on their email marketing and marketing automation (very similar to what I did at Starshot). I am trying not to get too far ahead of myself but as I am studying I am still researching programs and downloading materials that will help me prepare for when I do apply to these schools. I absolutely love Math so the quant section was a breeze to study and a lot of fun. Finding the time to study has also been a challenge. If my biggest problem through the application process is having to decide between my top school choice with no scholarship and a school lower down on my list with a decent scholarship, I will consider this process an absolute success and a problem I am looking forward to. Battle of Balaclava in the Crimean War The Battle of Balaclava was fought October 25, 1854, during the Crimean War (1853-1856) and was part of the larger Siege of Sevastopol. Having landed at Kalamita Bay in September, the Allied army had commenced a slow advance on Sevastopol. When the Allies elected to lay siege to the city rather than mount a direct assault, the British found themselves responsible for defending the eastern approaches to the area including the key port of Balaclava. Lacking sufficient men for this task, they soon came under attack from Prince Aleksandr Menshikovs forces. Advancing under the command of General Pavel Liprandi, the Russians were initially able to push back British and Ottoman forces near Balaclava. This advance was finally halted by a small infantry force and the Heavy Brigade of the Cavalry Division. To support their operations, the French established a base on the west coast at Kamiesh, while the British took Balaclava in the south. The Allies Establish Themselves By occupying Balaclava, Raglan committed the British to defending the Allies right flank, a mission that he lacked the men to accomplish effectively. Located outside of the main Allied lines, work began on providing Balaclava with its own defensive network. To the north of the city were heights which descended into the South Valley. Along the northern edge of the valley were the Causeway Heights across which ran the Woronzoff Road which provided a vital link to the siege operations at Sevastopol. To protect the road, Turkish troops began building a series of redoubts beginning with Redoubt No. 1 in the east on Canroberts Hill. Gathering around 25,000 men, Menshikov instructed General Pavel Liprandi to move to strike Balaclava from the east. Capturing the village of Chorgun on October 18, Liprandi was able to reconnoiter the Balaclava defenses. Developing his plan of attack, the Russian commander intended for a column to take Kamara in the east, while another attacked the eastern end of Causeway Heights and nearby Canroberts Hill. These assaults were to be supported by Lieutenant General Ivan Ryzhovs cavalry while a column under Major General Zhabokritsky moved onto the Fedioukine Heights. Commencing his attack early on October 25, Liprandis forces were able to take Kamara and overwhelmed the defenders of Redoubt No. 1 on Canroberts Hill. Pressing forward, they succeeded in taking Redoubts Nos. 2, 3, and 4, while inflicting heavy losses on their Turkish defenders.
